Global 2016 Carbon Emissons From Energy Sector Flat
Global carbon emissions from the energy sector were flat for the third year in a row in 2016, the International Energy Agency says. Growing renewable power generation, switching from coal to gas and better energy efficiency helped mute emissions even as the economy grew, according to the Paris-based watchdog. Though it's too soon to say global emissions have peaked, the IEA says the emerging trend is a "cause for optimism." Global emissions from the energy sector remained at 32.1 gigatons last year, with declining emissions in the U.S. and China offsetting increases elsewhere, the IEA says.
